Advantages of Dwarf Mondo Grass

by Robert Lawson on August 24, 2010

Planting dwarf mondo grass is one of the most convenient ways of covering or outlining your garden if you want to landscape it. Not only is it convenient, since it is easy to plant, but it is also one of the plants that gardeners love to take care of since it only requires a little maintenance. Dwarf mondo grass is scientifically known as Ophiopogon japonicas. It comes from the lilly family, but instead of being found in water like the lilies, mondo grass and its varieties live well in the soil.

A lot of gardeners prefer to plant this mondo grass variety in their garden for a number of reasons. Dwarf mondo has a clumped look which is neat to look at. Compared to original mondo grass, whose leaves can grow very long (similar to normal grass) the dwarf variety grows only at about 2 to 4 inches tall. It has a clean look because the blades are shorter, allowing you to create clean lines and sharp angles when designing a garden border.

Another reason for choosing a dwarf mondo grass over other plants is that the dwarf variety is sturdy as well as tolerant to different types of weather. It will thrive even in extreme hot or cold weather. It requires only a little water to live and only needs a little maintenance as it will easily thrive even if the soil is not ideal for plants. However it will not live long if it is constantly being plucked and kicked by kids while playing in the garden, so make sure to restrict it to areas that are free from heavy traffic and playing kids.

If you plan to use dwarf mondo as a ground covering there are ways to do that as well. It is best if the mondo clumps are planted 3 to 5 inches apart so that it can thrive easier. It will also spread once it has already adjusted to its environment. You can use fertilizers for the first few days if you wants to make sure that the plant will thrive. Once it has already adjusted, only a small amount of water is needed for the maintenance of the plant.
