Different Espresso Machine Options

by Robert Lawson on March 30, 2011

Getting your hands on an espresso machine means that you you are leaving the old coffee maker in the dust. I don’t blame you, once you have had good coffee it is hard to regress. If you are considering making the investment to buy an espresso machine, read on and find out about the different options that will be available.

Fully Automatic Espresso Machines

Lets just start at the top. If you have the money this is the way to go but many find it hard to justify spending $1000+ on an espresso machine even if it means that they don’t have to go to starbucks anymore. These babies do it all, from cleaning, to grinding to tamping. All you have to do is put water and beans in and out comes coffee.

Automatic Espresso Machines

These machines do almost everything but just not quite as much as the fully auto version. They are probably not able to handle quite the same volume as the previous but they can still make a good cup of coffee. You may have to invest in a separate grinder and add water yourself but they can be a good compromise for the price.

Semi Automatic Espresso Machines

As the description says these machines will make you do more of the work yourself. To some this is fun others may not be able to handle this much work in the morning. You will have to grind, fill, tamp, add water, and heat cups. Then when you are finished clean. You can find this version of espresso machine relatively cheaply. This is not something I would suggest for regular use.

Manual Espresso Machines

These machines mean work and a fair amount of it. This is how they used to make espresso when the world was flat. If you enjoy having to work for your addictions then this may be a good option for you. In addition to all of the previous steps you will also have to pump the machine to force the water through the grounds. Many of these machines are collectors items, so expect to pay a little more.

Combo Espresso Coffee Machines

We are starting to see hybrid machines that offer coffee or espresso. Not a surprise considering that many people find espresso simply too strong. If you haven’t taken the time to build your caffeine tolerance espresso will be too much. In addition to making espresso these machines will brew regular drip coffee.

So, if you are in the market for an espresso machine consider how much work you are willing to put into your espresso then make your decision.
