If you are anything like me (a bloke in his late forties), then you are probably not someone who has ever given a great deal of thought to luggage sets. After all, when I go travelling, I try to take as little as possible, or as little as is necessary for the trip anyway. If it’s a business trip and I need to take a suit, then I’ll try and pack everything in one of those fold-over suit carrier things (is that what you call a garment bag?). If it’s more of a casual trip or a holiday, then a simple suitcase or even a rucksack is generally fine for me.

But then not everyone likes to travel as light as I do. Some people (including certain members of my family!) like to take as much as they can when they travel and max out on their luggage allowance. After all, they say, if you are given a maximum, why not use it?

This is where luggage sets can come in very handy. If you have something like a 4-piece or 5-piece luggage set, then you can have different sized pieces of luggage for each member of the family, but all in matching style and material. So your wife and daughter for example could have their super large suitcases filled with all the clothes and accoutrements they need for going on holiday. Whereas you and your son for example could have much smaller pieces of luggage, for just the bare essentials.

Of course, when you share your family luggage in this way, the question then comes down to what kind of luggage set you should go for. The girls may be pushing for that pink luggage set or for something from Pierre Cardin (or even Louis Vuitton, for goodness sake), whereas you may want something a but less girly and more durable like a good strong Samsonite luggage set. Deciding which is the right one can be a very tricky business, so you may all need to agree on a compromise.

Then of course there is the whole issue of cost. A cheap luggage set can be a false economy, because the pieces will undoubtedly be poor quality and made of inferior materials, which means they are likely to break before too long. And there is nothing worse than seeing your broken luggage come through the carousel at the airport, with all your stuff spilling out all over the place. It’s a nightmare!

So our recommendation would always be to go for good quality luggage sets and suitcase sets, something strong and fairly stylish that will appeal to all the family, but not so gaudy that the male members of the clan feel embarrassed to be seen carrying it!
