Shop Lowes for Garage Storage Solutions

by Robert Lawson on July 13, 2011

Lowes is a great place to buy cabinets for your garage. (That assumes there is a Lowes near you; if not, Home Depot is a close second.) To begin the process, you should look online for ideas and “comparables,” of course, but when you are ready, go to Lowes and buy there. Why? That’s simple: Price, Quality and Selection.

Price is always a consideration when outfitting your garage with storage cabinets that work for your family. Garage storage solutions can run into the thousands and thousands of dollars, but those solutions are really an extravagance and only for folks who care about their garages more than the Average Joes or Josephines. If what you want is simple storage –- solutions that will help you create a clean, neat and orderly garage — then you don’t need to spend a fortune.

Your garage storage cabinets do need to last a long time, though, so you don’t necessarily want to look for the least expensive option and compromise quality. You want quality in materials and workmanship because you will want to have these cabinets serve you for years to come. Fortunately, Lowes doesn’t want to compromise quality, either. Primarily, they have a “brand” to protect, but they also actually lose money on the transaction if you come back for service on your cabinets or if there’s a return because you don’t like them. As long as you don’t buy some sort of “factory seconds” with known defects, you will probably be okay with Lowes brands. (One word of caution, though: If you live in a moist climate, stay away from the models made of fiberboard or MDF; they can develop problems if their surface protection is compromised.)

For our money, their selection is always “just right,” too -– not too much and not too little. You’ll find metal cabinets and some melamine (plastic) garage cabinets. Lowes offers floor-mounted models — some half-height and some full height — and there will often be choices offering shelves, closets, drawers or cubbies. You’ll normally find a rich assortment of possibilities, and your garage storage needs can be satisfied, right along with your budget.

Stick to the basics, and you can’t go wrong at Lowes. They have great prices, and the quality is solid and goes well beyond a “meets minimums” standard. After you shop around online and get some ideas about what you want for storage in your garage, you will find what you need at your local Lowes.
