The blow up mattress has come a long way in recent years and hopefully will continue to evolve into a better and better product as time goes on. At one point it was difficult to find an air mattress that would last for more than a few uses before springing a leak. Every blow up mattress came with a patch kit for good reason. Now you can choose a higher quality mattress and depend on it to stay inflated during the night and even for weeks at a time.

The higher quality blow up mattresses are made from stronger materials and are more durable than many of the inexpensive versions. There are a few exceptions to this such as the some of the lower priced air beds made by AeroBed and Coleman. These two companies make a simple, yet durable blow up mattress in the $50 – $60 price range that get good reviews by customers. Coleman specializes in air beds for outdoor use, while AeroBed makes a good product to use indoors for visiting guests.
If you need a blow up mattress that will be used on a continuous basis as a temporary bed or for long-term guests, you should check out some of the raised air beds that are known for their comfort. These beds are 22-24 inches high so you feel like you are sleeping on a real bed. Some come with pillow tops and controls to adjust the firmness. These mattresses also have built-in pumps so they inflate quickly with the flip of a switch. These larger mattresses take up more room when they are deflated so they may not be the best choice for camping or traveling.
If you are looking for a simple, inexpensive mattress for occasional use, beware of the very cheap air mattresses. It is often worth it to spend a few extra dollars to get a mattress that will at least get you through the night without waking up on the floor. The cheaper blow up mattresses are often not well made and are known for springing leaks or losing air within months of being purchased.
